VSC Young Instrumentalists' Competition

This competition is open to any pre-college student residing in Staunton, Waynesboro, Harrisonburg, or Lexington; or the counties of Augusta, Rockingham, or Rockbridge. It is designed for the serious student of music whose studies have carried him or her to a level of proficiency at or beyond “intermediate” on the following instruments: strings, wind, brass or piano. The competition is not limited to one who aspires to study music professionally.

Performance Guidelines:

• Your performance should include two works of medium length. The total performance time for both pieces should not exceed 10-12 minutes. The works chosen should represent two different musical periods from the Baroque Era to the Contemporary Period. The difficulty or the showiness of any piece is not as important as the understanding of style.
• The performer must provide his or her own accompanist. Only one of the two selections may be unaccompanied.
• Memorization is not necessary, but may be a part of the judge’s consideration.
• Transcriptions of music written for another instrument are acceptable.
• Bring a copy of your music, with the measures numbered, for the judges.
• First-place winner from the previous year is not eligible to compete.
